3 Common Oil Change Myths

At our auto repair shop, we’ve performed countless oil changes and have seen it all. Many drivers view oil changes as a chore, something they wish that can be put off. Some motorists are even risky enough to skip them. We’re here today to set the record straight on all the assumptions and misconceptions about oil changes. The key takeaway from this blog is that oil changes are the most important maintenance you can get for your vehicle, and you should never miss out on them!

Myth #1: Oil Changes Should Be Done Every 3,000 Miles or 3 Months

In this day and age, most vehicle owners should not follow this old rule. If you have an older vehicle, this rule may apply to you. However, the modern engine can go up to 10,000 miles before needing an oil change because of the growing popularity of additives and synthetic oils. All in all, you should check your owner’s manual to see what your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends for an oil change interval.

Myth #2: Topping Off On Oil Every Other Interval is Fine

This common misconception can hurt you a lot down the line. Over time, oil gets dirty and becomes less effective. And if your engine oil levels are low, there’s a likelihood that you are dealing with a leak. While topping off on oil is a good temporary solution, you should never skip your oil change service. During a service, our technicians will carefully inspect the engine, replace the oil filter, along with many other critical tasks.

Myth #3: Oil Changes Should Always Be Done at a Dealership

Many motorists with newer vehicles feel like it is only necessary or required to have all their maintenance and repairs done at the dealership. However, there are laws in place that state that the dealership is simply an option of many out there. There are many independent shops, like ours, that specialize in premium oil changes. We can do just as good of a job, if not better, than the dealer.

Oil changes are the most cost-effective way to protect your investment and keep your vehicle on the road for a long time. If you have any questions about oil changes or would like to schedule an oil service with Bimmer Motor Specialists, feel free to give us a call or visit soon!
